Inspired by the photographic works of the expedition photographers of the late 19th century (Jack Hillers, Carleton E. Watkins, William Henry Jackson, A.J. Russell, and most particularly, Timothy O'Sullivan), and later the works of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, and Minor White, I decided I must see the West for myself. I would learn from their technical processes while refining a personal way of seeing. With 4x5 field camera, a selection of lenses, tripod, and a portable dark box for loading and unloading sheet film holders, I made three road trips over a period of seven years. These are some of the many photos I created there from 1980 to 1987.
