Inspired by the photographic works of the expedition photographers of the late 19th century (Jack Hillers, Carleton E. Watkins, William Henry Jackson, A.J. Russell, and most particularly, Timothy O'Sullivan), and later the works of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, and Minor White, I decided I must see the West for myself. I studied these masters‘ camerawork and aesthetics, and I then applied my own way of seeing. With my 4x5 field camera, a selection of lenses, a tripod, and a portable dark box for loading and unloading sheet film holders, I made three road trips over seven years. These are some of the many photos I created out west from 1980 to 1987.
